Welcome from the Dean

Welcome to East Carolina University College of Nursing. Established in 1959, the School is now a center of excellence in nursing education, research, and practice in this underserved rural region, which has considerable multicultural diversity. The School's academic programs prepare professional nurses as baccalaureate generalists, as specialists for advanced practice at the master's level, and as scientists at the PhD level. Our undergraduate program is intended for first time college students, returning and transfer students as well as registered nurses who obtained their basic nursing education in community colleges and hospitals. Our master's program provides study options in, Nursing Leadership, Nursing Education, Nurse-Midwifery, Family Nurse Practitioner, Adult Nurse Practitioner, Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, or Nurse Anesthesia. The School also offers Post-Master's Certificates.  We also offer an Alternate Entry MSN option that allows students with baccalaureate degrees in other fields to pursue a master's degree. The PhD in Nursing was established in 2002 and offers research preparation for roles in ac ademia, healthcare organizations, and government.

The College of Nursing is committed to offering dynamic curricula that prepare graduates to think critically, collaborate with other disciplines, and be proactive professionals in community based health care systems. The School meets the educational needs of nurses in the region and elsewhere through exemplary teaching, clinical research and state-of-the-art professional service. On-campus instruction uses technological innovations in teaching and research. Outreach programs use both off-campus instruction and distance learning opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. Clinical partnerships with hospitals and service agencies help the region provide a variety of clinical nursing experiences, distance learning, and technological innovations in teaching and research.

The faculty members in the College of Nursing are committed to academic excellence. The current complement of 100-plus faculty members represents a wide range of clinical and content expertise. They hold the philosophy that academic nursing practice is based on theory and research. Their commitment to research advances the scientific basis of nursing practice and addresses health problems and health care issues of concern to professional nursing and to providers and consumers in the region.

The School takes pride in our rich and diverse student body. Our students are active in nursing through various student organizations and in community services. Our students represent us well as graduates. We have over 5000 alumni throughout the world.

I feel confident that the College of Nursing will continue its long tradition of quality professional nursing education that is needed to move our school and the nursing profession in the new millennium.
