Admission to the master of science in nursing degree program requires the student to meet the minimum admission requirements for graduate study as established by the university and the following requirements established by the College of Nursing.

  • A baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited program
  • A minimum GPA of 2.7 in undergraduate studies and a minimum GPA of 3.0 in nursing major
  • Currently hold a non-restricted license to practice as a registered nurse (RN) in North Carolina or a NCSBN compact state. Out-of-state applicants are only accepted from South Carolina.

  • One year RN experience (Labor and Delivery preferred but not required)
  • Demonstrate a commitment to practice with under-served populations

Though no applicant who falls below the ECU College of Nursing Graduate concentration minimum admission requirements (GPA of 3.0) is guaranteed admission, ECU Graduate School policy allows requests for admission by exception. The ECU Graduate School makes final decisions on these requests. These criteria will be used to inform decisions at the concentration level regarding requests for admissions by exception.

  • Completed graduate degree from a regionally-accredited institution or completed at least 9 semester hours graduate work without a degree with a GPA at 3.2 or better
  • Demonstrates success in current professional role as a nurse in clinical, research, policy, or healthcare improvement positions.
  • Strong recommendations from experienced healthcare leader with first-hand knowledge of professional work
