Accolades and Accomplishments Fall 2018
- Faculty member Jeanne Martin was recognized with the Faculty Impact Award at the 2018 ECU Faculty Symposium.
- Alumna Tywana Lawson, ’07, ’13, won the ECU Alumni Association’s 2018 Young Alumni Award.
- Faculty member Dr. Jan Tillman was invited to be one of four presenters at the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculty national webinar highlighting the use of Universal Design as a teaching method for graduate student nurses.
- Assistant professor Dr. Holly Wei was named the NCNA Nurse Educator of the Year. Dr. Wei also received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Qingdao University College of Nursing.
- 17 College of Nursing alumni were recognized among the 2018 Great 100 Nurses of North Carolina. They include: Candace Adkins, Deborah Allen, Amanda Bryan, Sally Caviness, Kimberly Davis, Jerry Godwin, Kimberly Hawkins, Jennifer Haynes, Kristin Henderson, Krystal Kennedy, Lauren Macko, Traci McLaughlin, Vicki Phillips, Angela Speer, Cindy Stilley, Patricia Wallace and Mary Wilson.
- Professor Dr. Kathy Sitzman was named by Dr. Jean Watson as one of only five individuals to ever receive the Distinguished Watson Caring Science Scholar distinction.
- DNP alumna Kim Hardy’s presentation to Pitt County Commissioners resulted in commissioners declaring nurses exempt from a 30-day hiring freeze that goes into effect whenever county government employees leave their positions.
- Faculty member Dr. Ann King was recognized by the Town of Swansboro Board of Commissioners for her work as a volunteer placed in charge of the medical response team in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence.
- Assistant professor Dr. Linda Bolin was elected as a Fellow of the American Heart Association.
- Clinical associate professor Dr. Donna Lake co-authored the National League for Nursing’s Toolkit for Recruitment and Retention of Military Nurse Officers for Second Careers in Nursing Education.
- Associate professor Dr. Kim Larson was selected as the 2018 recipient of ECU’s Achievement in International Service and Engagement Award.
- Assistant professor Dr. Tomika Williams and clinical professor Dr. Candace Harrington were selected by the National Hartford Center of Gerontological Nursing Excellence as a Distinguished Educator in Gerontological Nursing.
- Faculty and five May 2018 graduates in the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner program published five articles in the September/October 2018 issue of the journal Neonatal Network. The NNP program also had 12 students and 1 NCNS student invited to present posters in the Florida Association of NNPs annual symposium.
- Faculty and staff members Melissa Wallace and Becky Jordan had their scholarly work “Implementing Research Based Student Support Strategies in an Online RN/BSN Nursing Program” selected for the UNC System’s 2018 Student Success Conference.
- DNP alumna Dr. Terri Deer received a promotion to become Director of Trauma Services at New Hanover Regional Medical Center..
- Faculty member Dr. Donna Roberson was selected by Chancellor Cecil Staton as an ECU Faculty Marshall.
- Clinical Professor Dr. Debra Kosko was elected to the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care Nominating Committee.
- Alumna Erica Turner was named ECU Physicians’ 2018 Nurse of the Year.
- The Wayne County Pirate Nurse Network was established. Pirate Nurse Networks are member-driven organizations that allow ECU Nursing alumni to stay connected with each other and the college. There are also Pirate Nurse Networks at Vidant Medical Center and CarolinaEast Medical Center.
