Dear College of Nursing Alumni and Friends,

We have been very busy since our last Pirate Nurse Notes, finding our way through a virtual world. It was wonderful to meet so many new faces during the 12 reunion calls last fall as we began our 60th anniversary celebration. Alumni from across the country reconnected virtually, and we’ve heard back from so many of you who joined in that we’re planning to do them again. Look out for more news on that soon.

In place of our traditional Homecoming Reception in the College of Nursing, Dean Brown hosted the Coast-to-Coast Toast online in October, honoring 60 years of Pirate Nurses, which was warmly received far and wide. In November she held a virtual call with all of Nursing’s endowment donors for an unique 60th anniversary celebration. This was the first time our most generous donors had time with the dean and each other.

Virtual calls are certainly the easiest way to bring folks together from the comfort of their home, many of whom could not have made it to campus for these events.

As an outgrowth of the 60th anniversary, we initiated Legacy Launch, an ongoing program of nurses and friends of nursing supporting future nurses, and raised over $25,000 for Nursing Beacon Scholars and provided Pirate Nurses branded PPE for our new graduates. You can contribute anytime to this fund from the link above. T. A. Loving Company, inspired by the story of Nursing’s Legacy Launch found in The Scope, donated $10,000 to support future nurses during the pandemic! If you aren’t familiar with The Scope, subscribe to keep abreast of developments on the Division of Health Sciences campus.

Additionally, we have received several deferred gifts (establishing a new nursing endowment or giving to a particular one through their wills) from non-alumni! These donors were so moved by the College of Nursing’s contributions to our region and state that they have named it in their will! As an alumnus/alumna or friend of the college, is this something you would like to learn about?

Last fall was the Elaine Scott Lectureship Series. This spring, the second annual Horns’ Interprofessional Lectureship addressed competencies for interprofessional collaborative practices. The College of Nursing’s Dr. Linda Bolin and Dr. Carolyn Horne, plus faculty from several other colleges, are among the examples of interprofessional efforts happening around the University and throughout the Health Sciences Division. Their research project on Biofeedback and Quarantined COVID-19 patients, is an ongoing collaboration, with its lab even housed in the College of Allied Health Sciences. As part of our upcoming Nurses Week celebrations, I’m hoping you’ll share your favorite College of Nursing faculty story with us, so we can put something fun together.

As always, I am here to help you, answer your questions, and provide insight into how you can financially help the College of Nursing!

Lead On, Pirate Nurses, Lead On,
Elizabeth
