Administering IV medication IV PUSH
Equipment:
- Watch
- Gloves
- Alcohol pads
- Medication
- Syringe
- Needle for drawing up medication
- Normal saline syringe
Steps:
- WIIAPA:

- Wash hands
- Introduce self
- Identify patient (use 2 identifiers)
- Allergies – don’t forget food allergies
- Plan of care
- Assess patient
- Check accuracy and completeness of each MAR with provider’s written order including the patient’s name, medication name and dosage, route of administration and time of administration.
- Educate patient on medications including action and possible side effects. Allow patient to ask questions.
Close room curtain or door. - Perform hand hygiene.
- Utilizing aseptic technique, prepare medications for only one patient at a time and deliver medications to patient at correct time. Check label of medication carefully with MAR.
- Perform hand hygiene and apply clean gloves.
Clean injection port closet to patient with alcohol pad. Allow to dry. - Connect normal saline syringe to port and check for patency and blood
return. (Pause pump or occlude IV line by pinching just above injection port if continuously infusing). - Disconnect saline flush and clean port with alcohol pad. Allow to dry.
- Connect medication syringe and use watch and push over allotted time needed for medication to be administered correctly.
- Disconnect medication syringe, clean port with alcohol pad, and allow to dry.
- Flush injection port with normal saline at same rate medication was delivered. (Restart IV if continuous fluids infusing).
- Help patient to comfortable position, place call bell within reach, lower bed and raise side rails as appropriate.
Discard supplies, remove gloves and perform hand hygiene. - Stay with patient for several minutes and observe for any allergic reactions.
