Dr. Michael L. Jones’ Biography

Dr. Jones is a native of Leake County, Mississippi and currently resides in Greenville, North Carolina. In his approximately 25 years as a Registered Nurse, Dr. Jones has served in various capacities across the healthcare spectrum, which includes his current role as the inaugural Associate Dean for Culture, Engagement, and Professional Development as well as Clinical Associate Professor for the East Carolina University (ECU) College of Nursing, which is in Greenville, North Carolina. Prior to his service at ECU, Dr. Jones served as Richards Endowed Graduate Nursing Chair, Assistant Professor of Nursing, and Research Development Coordinator for the Mary Inez Grindle School of Nursing at Brenau University in Norcross, Georgia. Dr. Jones also served for many years as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Jackson State University School of Public Health in Jackson, Mississippi as well as Chief Community Health Officer for the University of Mississippi Medical Center, which is also located in Jackson, Mississippi.

Dr. Jones completed his initial college coursework at East Central Community College. He earned his formal nursing education at Meridian Community and the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Nursing. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing from Hampton University in 2020. Dr. Jones holds an Executive Certificate in Leadership from the University of Notre Dame Mendoza College of Business.

Dr. Jones’ research interests focus on community-based care, men’s health, health disparity elimination, and population health. Dr. Jones is the recipient of the 2023 Faculty Scholar Grant Award by the Foundation for Academic Nursing, which is an arm of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. Through this award, Dr. Jones conducted research to understand the perspectives of middle school students, parents, teachers, and guidance counselors related to pursuing nursing as a profession. Additionally, Dr. Jones was funded by the American Nurses Association to conduct research to understand the perspectives of high school students, parents, teachers, and guidance counselors related to pursuing nursing as a profession. The goal of both awards is to increase the number of individuals from eastern North Carolina in the nursing profession who have traditionally experienced barriers to earning a nursing education. In 2013, Dr. Jones received the Mississippi State Medical Association (MSMA) Excellence in Medicine Wellness Promotion Award for his work to address health disparities in Mississippi during his tenure as Chief Community Health Officer for the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

In November of 2024, Dr. Jones was inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, the highest accomplishment of the nursing profession. He was one of ten fellows selected in the state of North Carolina. According to the American Academy of Nursing, “the 2024 Class of Fellows, selected from a competitive pool of applicants, represents a cross-section of nursing’s most dynamic leaders who are making positive change in their systems and communities to champion health and wellness”.

Dr. Jones is a co-founder of the Network of Black Male Nurse Leaders, which is designed to empower black male nurses across the country by providing a robust support system, offering mentorship opportunities, and advocating for professional growth. During his current tenure in the ECU College of Nursing, Dr. Jones, in partnership with local community-based organizations in Pitt County, North Carolina, established and leads the Emerging Healthcare Scholars Leadership Institute, which is designed to provide a pipeline program into the nursing profession for middle school and high school students who otherwise, face barriers to earning a nursing education.

Dr. Jones serves on several local, state, and national boards and committees, which includes the Board of Directors for the Institute for the Advancement of Minority Health where he serves as Board Treasurer. He is a Past Chair of the National Advisory Panel on Clinical Trials for the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), which is a congressionally mandated organization and advisory panel. Additionally, he serves as a member of the National Advisory Committee for the Minority Fellowship Program, which is sponsored by the American Nurses Association (ANA) and the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA). He was recently appointed as an Advisory Board Member for the Nurses’ Health Study 3, which is a research study managed by Harvard University T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Jones serves as an Assistant Editor for the Association of Black Nursing Faculty Foundation Journal as well as a member of the Editorial Board for Nursing Management – The Journal of Excellence in Nursing Leadership. Dr. Jones serves as an independent health care consultant, which includes his role as a nursing, healthcare, and research content writer. Dr. Jones, in his spare time, enjoys gardening and collecting African art. Dr. Jones is a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma, Inc.

Dr. Jones is the proud father of two children who currently reside in Byram, MS: Mikayla, a freshman at Hinds Community College in Raymond, Mississippi and Dylan, a junior at Terry High School in Terry, Mississippi.

Angelia Warner’s Biography:

Angelia Warner joined the ECU College of Nursing on June 5, 2023, as the Administrative Support Associate for the ECU College of Nursing Office of Culture Engagement and Professional Development. Over the past 27 years, she has performed a wide range of advanced administrative and clerical support functions and enjoys assisting others in any way that she can. Angelia is a graduate of Eastern New Mexico University where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Computer Information Systems. Angelia has been a member of the North Carolina Association of Educational Office Professionals since 2012. Angelia currently resides in Wayne County but is a native of Bleckley County in Georgia. Angelia is inspired daily by her husband, who is a retiree of the United States Air Force, and their two daughters. In her free time, Angelia enjoys spending time with family and friends, decorating, crafting, and traveling.
