Preceptors: Invitation to Adjunct Role

Dear Clinical Instructors:

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your generous work in the clinical education of ECU Nurse Anesthesia (SRNA) students. We are very appreciative of your time and effort teaching our students in the operating room, simulation lab and classroom.

One way we can acknowledge your contributions is by submitting a letter of support on your behalf for consideration for an adjunct faculty role at the East Carolina University College of Nursing. We are hopeful that you will consider this opportunity. Please note the nomination procedure process as outlined below.

Definition of Adjunct Faculty:

The category of adjunct faculty includes those who are not employed full or part-time by East Carolina University College of Nursing but who make a contribution to the teaching, service, or research mission of the College of Nursing. Adjunct faculty typically contribute through teaching in the classroom or college laboratory, serving as a clinical preceptor, providing consultation to faculty and/or students, collaborating on research projects, or contributing to other scholarly projects sponsored by the College of Nursing. Adjunct faculty are not eligible for tenure from East Carolina University College of Nursing. However, they are invited to attend College of Nursing faculty meetings as non-voting members.

Qualifications:

The candidate must possess a minimum of a master’s or doctorate in the area of specialization specific to the contribution or service provided. In special situations, alternate academic credentials may be justified for those with extensive experience and/or expertise who make outstanding contributions in their area of specialization.

Benefits for adjunct faculty include:

  • Use of the Health Sciences Library via the Internet
  • Purchase of season tickets to athletic events at 20% discount
  • Purchase of membership to Eakin Student Recreation Center at the faculty rate
  • Discounts on season tickets for the adult Performing Arts Series, the Young Audience Performing Arts Series, and Travel Film Series
  • Access to facilities at Mendenhall Student Center such as bowling, billiards, and table tennis for the normal fee for faculty/staff. Free admission to movies in Hendrix Theater (except for certain movies which require an admission fee)
  • Participation in trips arranged each year by the Student Union Travel Committee
  • Many of these activities require an ECU 1 Card. These cards are made at the Health Sciences Student Center in room 224 during scheduled hours. Please visit the ECU 1 Card website for further details on obtaining an ECU 1 Card. *Please note that the activities that require an ECU 1 Card are subject to revision from time to time by university officials.*

Nomination Procedure:

Faculty of the ECU College of Nursing are allowed to submit names of candidates for initial appointment as adjunct faculty. Appointments are made for three years. To achieve adjunct faculty status, we will need from you:

  • A copy of your current vita
  • A letter of recommendation from a peer
  • A background check (the expense for which will be covered by the ECU College of Nursing)
  • An official transcript for highest degree earned (an official transcript will have the university’s seal and Registrar’s signature)
