- Research Interest: Identify variability in perceptions of relational quality of the RN and NA working in an acute care system, examine the relationship between RN and NA relational quality and safety composites as influenced by the supervisor/manager, and evaluate how RN and NA relational quality influence the overall patient safety culture of a unit.
- Innovation: The importance of relationship quality is discussed in the literature in reference to organizational effectiveness and teamwork. To our knowledge, this is the first article to define relational quality (RQ) as the effectiveness of exchanges between the RN and NA
- Research Context / Setting: Fulltime employees within an academic medical center, four community hospitals, and three critical access hospitals located in the southeastern USA
- Study Design: Cross sectional secondary analysis
- Research Population: Registered Nurses and Nursing Assistants.
- Sampling Strategy: RNs and NAs (n=1152) from 53 inpatient settings completed the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (AHRQ HSOPSC) survey.
- Intervention: Published a systematic review. Campbell, AR, Layne, D, Scott, E, Wei, H. Interventions to promote teamwork, delegation and communication among registered nurses and nursing assistants: An integrative review. J Nurs Manag. 2020; 28: 1465– 1472. https://doi.org/10.1111/jonm.13083
