The BSN to DNP curriculum in the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Specialty is a 70 semester-hour curriculum that prepares nurses for entry into advanced practice. The curriculum is designed for students who have earned a bachelor’s (or higher) degree in nursing, and who now wish to pursue an advanced nursing practice role. The FNP program includes 840 clinical practice hours in primary care settings, and also includes completion of a four-semester DNP project.

As part of the mission and vision of ECU and the College of Nursing, the FNP program emphasizes community-oriented primary care. Graduates provide comprehensive health promotion services to ambulatory clients; evaluate presenting problems at the client’s initial contact with the primary care system; and provide continuing care to clients and their families with acute and stable chronic illnesses. We seek students who have a commitment to rural and underserved populations in Eastern North Carolina and beyond.

Our students work collaboratively with interprofessional teams in a variety of settings, such as clinics, schools, health departments, and long-term care organizations. Our program is offered in a hybrid format with the majority of classroom work being completed online.

Students are required to hold an active registered nurse licensure in North Carolina (or a compact state.) Clinical rotations are also completed solely in North Carolina. We offer assistance with clinical placements, academic advising, and student-support services. Graduates are eligible to sit for the American Nurses’ Association (ANCC) or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) certification examination for Family Nurse Practitioners.

Institutional and Professional Licensure Disclosures for Enrolled and Prospective Students

ECU degree programs satisfy the professional licensure and/or certification requirements in North Carolina and prepare students to sit for these exams. However, requirements in other states may be different.

If you are considering a degree program that may, would, could or potentially lead to a professional license and/or certification please note that at this time ECU may or may not be able to advise whether a program meets requirements outside of North Carolina. Prior to enrolling in a degree program, please discuss this important topic with your program of interest.
